Doctor, my child is 15 years old and diagnosed with Osteosarcoma. Is this curable? How do we cure this condition?
dr. Lee Eu Jin replied 2 years ago

Osteosarcoma is a type of aggressive bone cancer. They occur most commonly in teenagers and young adults. It tends to affect the long bone of the thigh (femur) although it can occur in the other bones too. Treatment of such conditions include radiation therapy, chemotherapy and surgery. Treatment plans are based on the doctor's assessment on the patients condition such as the size and grade of the osteoscaroma and if it has spread beyond the bone. Current treatment modalities have significantly improved the outlook and prognosis for these patients. A cure may be achieved!

Doctor, I am a basketball player. I fell during the game 2 months ago and until now my ankle still hurts alot. What should I do? How long does it take for the ankle to become normal again usually?
dr. Lee Eu Jin replied 2 years ago

Thank you for writing. Pain in the ankle after a game of sports that persists after 2 months will need to be checked carefully. It would be important to evaluate if the problem arises from the bone, joint or ligaments. A very common injury to the ankle from basketball would be a ligament tear in the ankle. This results in instability of the joint. If left untreated, it can cause associated injuries to the joint as well as premature degenerative changes. I would suggest that you go see an orthopaedic surgeon for an evaluation.

Hello. Thank you for your query. The problem that you have in the lumbar spine can be treated in many different ways including the use of medications, physiotherapy and surgery. Doctor, my knee joints are stiff so it is hard for me to squat and stand. I hear a cracking sound when I bend them. Is there any medicine to cure this? I am 49 years old.
dr. Lee Eu Jin replied 2 years ago

Hello and thank you for your query. The problems in the knees are most commonly due to osteoarthritis. This is a degenerative condition in the knee due to age. It can also be due to previous injuries to the knee. Treatment for this will depend on the severity of the condition. Do arrange for a consultation with your orthopedic doctor and let the doctor assess the condition of your knee. At times a simple course of medication or exercise will suffice, and if bad a knee replacement can be considered.

Our cousin fell and his hip bone shifted. Is surgery the only solution, Doctor?
dr. Lee Eu Jin replied 2 years ago

Hello and thank you for your query. I believe you mean your cousin fell and suffered a fracture of the hip. It is common that we do surgery to fix the fracture of the hip after a fall. This is to ensure proper restoration of form and function to the hip. The type of surgery to be performed and its risks will depend on the fracture configuration and other patient factors. it would be wise to discuss these with your doctor.

dr. Lee Eu Jin replied 2 years ago

hello! and thank you for your query. the problem in your thumb is likely to be a "trigger finger" or "trigger thumb". From your description, this would sound serious enough that you should seek an orthopaedic consult. It'll be important to assess for severity and condition of the thumb before recommending treatment. If left untreated, it will get worse.

Good morning, dr. Lee Eu Jin. I have pinched nerves on my left hip. What should I do?
dr. Lee Eu Jin replied 2 years ago

Thank you for your query. It is uncommon to have pinched nerves in the region of the hip. A more common problem would be osteoarthritis in the hip or a pinched nerve in the lower back or lumbar spine. The most common condition resulting in a pinched nerve in the region of the hip would be piriformis syndrome and this can be treated conservatively. I would suggest seeing an orthoapedic surgeon to get an accurate diagnosis and treatment plan.

Doctor, my father in law is 55 years old. But he already has a walking problem, even though his body still looks strong. He complains about pain in his knee. He has never fallen down before. Is 55 the normal age to develop osteoporosis? He exercises regularly. That’s why I am surprised to see his condition. Is this really due to osteoporosis or an underlying injury? It has been a week since he complained about the pain in his knee. Should I take him to an orthopedist?
dr. Lee Eu Jin replied 2 years ago

Hello and good morning. The pain in your Father in Law's knees is likely to be due to osteoarthritis. This is a degenerative condition in the knee, like a "wear and tear". It could be related to the type of activities that he does or to previous injuries during sports. It would be important to get it properly assessed and have treatment started. Osteoporosis is also an age related condition where the bone weakens. A special test called a BMD will be able to determine if the problem in the knees is related to osteoporosis. A review with an orthopaedic surgeon will be useful.

Hello and good morning. The pain in the hip could be related to the previous injury 2 years ago. I would suggest that you see an orthopaedic doctor and have the hip properly assessed and treated. Having pain the arm while working out in the gym is more commonly due to muscle injury. This is because the muscles can be weakened from the initial fracture and also during surgery. There is also a possibility that the fracture has not completely healed. We call this a non- union or a delayed union. Please see your orthopaedic doctor and have it examined.

dr. Lee Eu Jin replied 2 years ago

hello and good morning. Thank you for contacting us. Osteoporosis is a condition of the bone where it is weak and easy to fracture. This is most commonly due to age, but can be associated with other conditions too. Osteoporosis does not usually cause pain. The most common problem causing joint pains would be osteoarthritis. I would suggest that you consult an orthopaedic doctor to determine the cause of your pain, given that it is bad that you have difficulty walking.

I have had nerve impingement since 2002 in my lumbar spine L2. 16 years later, in 2018, I had calcification and felt numbness in my right feet, specifically on my toe. I also have stricture in my spine. Can it be cured, Doctor?
dr. Lee Eu Jin replied 2 years ago

Hello and good evening. Thank you for your query. The problem that you have described is usually due to a degenerative process. A combination of having a prolapsed disc as well as degeneration of the small joints in the spine results in nerve impingement and nerve injury. This is the reason why you feel numb in the right foot and toe. Given the severity of the problem, surgery is usually recommended to decompress the nerve to allow recovery.

Good afternoon Doctor. My name is Enny, and I am a 67 year old female. I have been living with stroke for 22 years due to high tension. I also have obstruction in the heart and I had a stent 4 years ago. Due to the stroke, I have problems walking, and feel as though there’s a burden on my right foot. Now I feel pain in my left knee if I walk or sit for too long, and if I have to squat.  I regularly check my condition with a neurologist. I also have the picture of my knee taken, grade 2, and I’ve already had laser treatment and have been taking Artoflam 1x1 for 8 months. For your information, these are the medicines I take regularly: Clopidogrel 1x1 night Candesartan 8 mg 1x1 morning Amlodipine 5mg 1x1 evening Atorvastatin 20mg 1x1 night Concor 2,5 mg 1x1 morning Artoflam 1x1 night   My question: can Artoflam cure my knee condition? Why don't I feel better with the laser and the medicines I have been taking? Are there any side effects of the medicine I take? Please give me your advice. Thank you so much for this opportunity.
dr. Lee Eu Jin replied 2 years ago

Hello and good evening. Than you for contacting us. The problem that you have in the right knee and leg is a combination of overloading (due to weakness on the left) as well as weakened musculature about the knee. You condition can be managed with the use of appropriate medications, including the use of injections and rehabilitation and strengthening the muscles of the right leg with the physiotherapist. The medication that you are taking will not “cure” the problem. It will take away the aches and pains though. Laser treatment does not work for the knee joint unfortunately.

dr. Lee Eu Jin replied 2 years ago

Hello and good morning. Thank you for contacting us. Nerve impingement is often due to a mechanical or structural problem causing compression and injury to the nerve. Unless the source of compression is addressed, the problem will not be solved. It is common that we try to work around the problem by precsribing physiotherapy to condition the muscles and areas affected by the compressed nerve. Surgery if often needed should the condition be severe.

I feel pain on my shoulder, near the right side of my neck. It hurts so much until I cannot bend my neck toward my right shoulder. If I touch it, I feel something hard in that area. What condition is this, Doc?

Doc, I fell from a motorcycle in the middle of last year. My shoulder was dislocated but it has been treated by a doctor. Now, I often feel pain in one point on my upper spine, between the shoulders, five fingers below my neck. That part hurts a lot if it is pressed, making my breath tight. But for walking or lying down, it doesn’t hurt. I want to ask, is this due to my old injury? Is it dangerous if I leave it untreated?

dr. Lee Eu Jin replied 2 years ago

hello and thank you for contacting us. The problem in the shoulder may be related to your old injury. This is a problem of the muscles called a trigger point. It is not dangerous, but you should have it checked and properly treated. Usually, a short course of medications and physiotherapy will suffice.

Doc, I want to ask. My son had surgery 10 days ago. His foot was stabbed by a toothpick. The doctor didn’t stitch it due to the possibility of infection that would end up with a pile of pus in it. So he just inserted a tosca-colored gauze. Now, my son can walk again. But when I change the gauze, the gauze inside his wound is pulled out. Is that okay, Doc?

I am 52 years old and have osteoarthritis in the knee. Once in two weeks, I do knee therapy. Is there any medicine to cure the joint pain?

dr. Lee Eu Jin replied 2 years ago

Hello and thank you for contacting us. Osteoarthritis is a degenerative condition of the knees. It is similar to “wear and tear” of the joint, which is why it is more common in the older population. There are many different treatment options for the problem, including the use of medications, physiotherapy, injections and surgery. The treatment modality will depend on the condition of your knee as well as your activity level. It would be important to customise the treatment plan in accordance to every patient. The use of medicines will not “cure” the problem. It serves to control the inflammation and pain, allowing you to function better. Do see an orthopaedic doctor for a closer consultation regarding your diagnosis and treatment options.

Doc, my brother’s son is 21 years old and he had a fracture once. It has been treated but that area is swollen and hot if touched. He also has been having high fever for these 5 days. Paracetamol doesn’t work. He said the area where he used to have a fracture now hurts again. It is swollen and hard. What condition is this? How do we treat it? Thank you

dr. Lee Eu Jin replied 2 years ago

Hello and thank you for contacting us. It would be important to identify the location of the fracture, if there were any open wounds in association with it and how it was treated. The date of injury would also be important. Most regular fractures will take an estimated time of 3- 6 months to heal. I would suggest that you see an orthopaedic doctor to have it checked. You will probably need a set of xrays and/ or blood tests.

Good afternoon, Doc. I want to ask. My wife has dislocated hips in 2017. It has been treated by an orthopedist and she doesn’t have any complaints about her condition anymore until now. Now, my wife is waiting for the birth of our child. When we consulted an obgyn, the doctor is worried her hip condition will put her in a risky situation if she delivers via normal birth. Is that correct, Doc? Or is it fine to give birth normally, knowing that the baby position is normal too? Or how? Thank you

Doc, I have seen an orthopedist to check the joint of my waist. I underwent an x-ray and the doctor said I have osteoarthritis. I was prescribed medicines and asked to do physiotherapy. However, I cannot do physiotherapy because the location is far and they asked me to come back after one month to monitor the condition. My question is, can it be cured only with medicines? I feel better when I take my medicines. Thank you

Hello and thank you for contacting us. Osteoarthritis in the waist cannot be cured with medications. The aim of using medicines would be to control the symptoms and inflammation in the joint. Doctor, earlier this year, in February, my son had stage 1 ACL injury. He fell and his knee hit the road. His knee was swollen and painful. At that time, his doctor gave him medicines and bandaged his knee. The doctor also gave him knee movement therapy. Eventually, his pain and swelling were relieved. But, a few weeks later, my son complained about instability in his knee. If he wanted to walk, he had to wait for a while to adjust and then walked slowly. But so far, he never complained about pain. I want to ask, is there any chance that he still has injury despite not feeling the pain? And should I take him to the doctor again until his condition is fully normal?

dr. Lee Eu Jin replied 2 years ago

Hello and thank you for contacting us. How old is your son? A Grade 1 injury to the ACL usually implies that the injury is mild. We divide the grades into 3. 3 being the worst. It is normal for the pain to improve after the initial injury. The concern with such an injury is instability of the knee. I would suggest that he go back and have the knee reassessed. an MRI scan of the knee would be useful if it is not already done. It would be important to reassess the ACL, and evaluate for other associated injuries. Do let me know if you need further assistance.

As this is a mechanical problem with the joint, non- surgical treatments will modulate the symptoms, but will not solve the root problem. A knee replacement can be an excellent choice of treatment. It will allow the knee to recover and function well, without the need for further intervention. Perhaps It would be useful for us to have a teleconsult and discuss it further.

hello and thank you for contacting us. The problem in the feet can be varied. Common conditions in the elderly include arthritis in the small joints and ankle, as well as deformities such as a hallux valgus or bunions. I’m afraid I cannot offer much of an advice without more information. Do see an orthopaedic doctor or contact us for a teleconsult for further evaluation.

Hi Doc, I am a 37 years old male. My xray showed tapered both Eminentia Intercondylaris. Can it be cured on its own or should I undergo surgery? It has been 1 year since I felt pain in my knee and the movement is limited, I have even been hearing a cracking sound. Is there any therapy to remove the tapered bones? Is surgery safe, or are there side effects and risks I should know? Please give me your answer, Doc. Thank you

dr. Lee Eu Jin replied 2 years ago

hello and thank you for contacting us. The xray report indicates the presence of osteophytes in the knee. From the report, it does not seem bad. The pain in the knee can be due to early onset osteoarthritis or due to other factors including having inflammation of the muscles and tendons. Other than having back pain, it will can also result in pain in the leg from the injured nerve- this we call Sciatica. It also can result in numbness and weakness of the affected muscles and nerves. There is usually no bruising or swelling that can be seen. You should see an orthopaedic doctor and have it checked. Surgery maybe needed if severe. Do let me know if you need further assistance.

Doctor, my mother is 50 years old. Her right knee often hurts, she needs time to rise up from a sitting position, and she walks very slowly. Is there any medicine or supplement to reduce the pain? She has taken a joint supplement and bone vitamin but the pain still persists. Thank you

dr. Lee Eu Jin replied 2 years ago

Hello and thank you for contacting us. The pain in the knee is most commonly due to osteoarthritis. This is a degenerative condition of the knee where the joint is no longer functioning well due to age. This results in pain, stiffness and weakness in the knees. She should consult an orthopaedic doctor to evaluate the state of her knees, especially if the medications mentioned are not working. Do let me know if you need further assistance.

Doc, my left hip is painful or slightly hurts when I do heavy activities. Specifically under my left hip or above the tailbone. The pain is not in the crotch. Is it hip arthritis or spine, Doc? My legs also cramp, especially when I tilt to my left or right.

dr. Lee Eu Jin replied 2 years ago

hello and thank you for contacting us. The pain at the back of the hip is suggestive of osteoarthritis of the hip. This is a degenerative condition which affects the joint, resulting in pain, stiffness or a sensation of weakness. Other causes for a pain in the region can be due to Piriformis Syndrome or arising from a problem in the lower back. It would be wise to consult an orthopaedic doctor and have it accurately diagnosed and treated.

Hello, Doc. I am 67 years old. My knee hurts when I squat and it is hard for me to stand. Please give me your advice. Thank you

Doc, I want to ask. For ACL surgery, would the doctor take the graft from the tendon? Since the tendon itself has its own function, would there be any functional defect?

dr. Lee Eu Jin replied 2 years ago

Hello and thank you for contacting us. There are pros and cons for using an autograft (your own tendon) versus using an allograft (a tendon graft from another person). The choice of graft will depend on the condition of your knee, the surgical plan amongst other factors. Of my own patients, about 30-40% of patient elect to use an allograft to avoid sacrificing their own tendons. Do speak with your doctor or arrange for a consult with us for a more detailed explanation.

Hello, Doc, I am 58 years old. I have coronary heart disease, osteoporosis and knee arthritis. I have taken hyalgan injections from 2009 to 2016. I have also tried therapy. Can it be totally cured, Doc?

dr. Lee Eu Jin replied 2 years ago

hello and thank you for contacting us. Osteoarthritis in the knee is a degenerative condition. As such, it cannot be cured. It is akin to us not being able to cure ageing. Treatment for arthritis aims at improving the pain and restoring function to the affected joint. The use of Hyaglan injections is one option. It would be important to assess the severity of the condition and recommending appropriate treatment. Do speak with your doctor or you can arrange a teleconsult with us for a more detailed consultation.
